About Dilakian Brothers
Hovik and Gagik Dilakian were born in Armenia, in the family of famous Armenian actor and entertainer Tatul Dilakian and stage director Alma Shahinyan. They grew up in the house that was the center of gathering for many musicians, actors, and artists. Their collaboration with art started when five-year-old Hovik asked three-year-old Gagik to help him with finishing the drawing of a horse he was struggling with. Gagik, to Hovik's surprise, turned the drawing into a "masterpiece." That was the beginning of a lifelong journey to art.
In the early 70s, they started working at ARMENFILM studio as animators. In 1976, they created Armenia’s most influential animated film Gtnvats Eraz (Found Dream), which is still one of Armenia's most popular and beloved cartoons. Hovik emigrated to New York City in 1978, where he became an illustrator for magazines, books, and record covers. Among his clients were Time magazine, Business Week, Esquire, Atlantic Records, Simon & Schuster, winning many awards in that field. After 10 years Gagik reunited with his brother in New York an the this was the beginning of new era in their artistic life.
In the 90s, the brothers were working with TOO’S Company and NEW YORK HAT company, creating designs for hats, umbrellas, jewelry, products for children, etc. Some of their designs were featured in New York Magazine's best bets, among the best designs of the year. Living away from home, the Dilakian brothers never lost touch with Armenia. They created a series of works based on the Armenian symbol Mount Ararat called ArarART, which was exhibited in Yerevan, Armenia.
